Ready to Plan a Trip to Maui?
Imagine arriving in Maui and being greeted by fresh flower leis and the sounds of the ukelele and lovely hula dancers.
That’s one of the great memories I have of Maui. I knew immediately that I was going to have a wonderful time, even though I was there for work! Maui is my kind of destination.
Maui is typically right at the top of the list for honeymooners and families. Planning a trip to the island of Maui offers scenic vistas and the intoxicating scent of flowers and coconut. The locals are so nice and everywhere you go, you hear soothing Hawaiian music playing.
I have worked with so many of my couples to book honeymoons to Maui! I wanted to share some insightful information here with you, to help you determine whether or not it’s time for you to plan a trip to Maui!
Here are some of my top tips for planning a trip to Maui!
When should I start planning my visit to Maui?
Maui is a very popular island destination, so it is important to book early!
I recommend booking your honeymoon or vacation to Maui at least 6-8 months in advance. This will ensure that you get the best availability and the best rates!
The Best Time of Year to Plan a Trip to Maui
Maui’s weather is warm and picturesque all year long!
But, if you’re looking for the best months to visit Maui, my recommendation is April-May and September-November.
The Spring and Fall seasons provide the pleasant weather Hawaii vacationers seek without the high rates and heavy crowds that accompany the Summer and Winter months!
Get to Know the Beaches of Maui
Maui is the second-largest Hawaiian island. If you are planning a trip to Maui, a stop at their acclaimed beaches is a must!
The island is beloved for its famous beaches, views of migrating humpback whales (during the winter months), farm-to-table cuisine, and the magnificent sunrise and sunset from Haleakala.
Maui is also known for it’s ‘road to Hana’, the easternmost tip of the island (more on that below)!
It’s not surprising that Maui has been voted “Best Island in the U.S.” by Condé Nast Traveler readers for more than 20 years.
With 120 miles of coastline, Maui boasts over 30 miles of beautiful beaches.
Maui’s beaches are comprised of white, black or red sands. Their beaches play host to renowned surfing and windsurfing spots. Maui’s beaches are also some of the best spots in the world for swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing.
What is the Road to Hana?
Along Maui’s rugged eastern coastline is the peaceful town of Hana, considered one of the last unspoiled Hawaiian frontiers.
The legendary road to Hana is only 52 miles from Kahului; however, the drive can take anywhere from two to four hours to complete since it’s fraught with narrow one-lane bridges, hairpin turns and incredible island views.
Take a day to drive to Hana, this should be on the top of your list!
“The Hana Highway (HI-360) has 620 curves and 59 bridges. The road leads you through flourishing rainforests, flowing waterfalls, plunging pools and dramatic seascapes.
Please keep in mind that you’ll encounter challenging turns and narrow bridges along the way, so it’s important to exercise caution and take your time.
There are plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the lovely views, so get an early start and take your time on your drive.
While it’s all about the journey, once you reach the beautiful and quiet town of Hana, you’ll see why it’s worth the trip!
Historic St. Sophia’s Church marks your arrival into Hana, where the pastures roll right up to the main street.
The historic Travaasa Hana is a luxurious retreat in this village rooted in Hawaiian tradition.
Browse the Hasegawa General Store and Hana Ranch Store for unique souvenirs. Swim and sunbathe at Hana Beach Park or Hamoa Beach, cited by author James Michener as the most beautiful beach in the Pacific. Sunbathe at Waianapanapa State Park, a beautiful black sand beach. Or visit Hale Piilani, the state’s largest heiau (Hawaiian temple), in Kahanu Garden, one of five National Tropical Botanical Gardens in Hawaii.
Beyond Hana, venture 10 miles south to the outskirts of Haleakala National Park in Kipahulu. There you’ll find the Pipiwai Trail where you can hike to the 400-foot Waimoku Falls”

Whales, in Maui?!
Whale watching is one of the most popular things to do while visiting Maui!
November through January are normally the months where the humpback whales start showing on the waters off Maui. This continues right up to April and early May, which is considered the end of the season.

Lilian’s Personal Travel Advice
There’s so much to do in Maui! You can easily spend an entire week, just on the island of Maui, and never run out of activities!
If you plan on spending more than a week in Hawaii, I would recommend visiting two islands!
Kauai or The Big Island are also amazing to add on to your Maui trip. Kauai is a personal favorite destination of mine!
While you’re in Maui, don’t leave without attending a Luau, taking a day trip to Hana and snorkeling in Molokini!
Maui is a very romantic destination and I highly recommend it for honeymoons!
You don’t have to worry about packing along a passport if you are a US Citizen, because Hawaii is the 50th state!
